FARGO, N.D. - Valley City State erupted for 28 first quarter points and 42 in the first half as they finished the 2015 season with a monster 56-7 victory Sunday against Waldorf College.
Playing in the Fargodome as part of the Dacotah Bank/North Star Bowl, Valley City State put up 411 yards of total offense in the first half as the Vikings built a 42-0 lead over the Warriors and rolled to the victory.
Valley City State ends the season with a 7-3 overall record. After dropping to 3-3 on Oct. 3, the Vikings ended the season strong with four straight victories. Waldorf College drops to 2-7 overall.
The Vikings wasted little time putting points as the board Sunday as quarterback Kurtis Walls connected with Colby Lum for a 74-yard touchdown on just the third play of the game. The Vikings poured it on from there in the first half. Josh Hansana took a handoff and then passed 31 yards to Lum for VCSU's second touchdown just three minutes later.
Tate Aronson and Jacob Duilio each added 3-yard touchdown runs to put VCSU up 28-0 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Zackary Schmidt took a screen pass from Walls and scampered six yards for a touchdown and a 35-0 lead. The Vikings completed the first-half scoring when Walls found Tyler Ukestad in the end zone for a 9-yard score and a 42-0 lead. VCSU's defense forced three first-half turnovers as Ethen Preston recovered a fumble and both Jawuan Pugh and Nicholas McBeain intercepted passes.
VCSU led by as much as 56-0 before the Warriors scored a late touchdown. VCSU scored its two second half touchdowns on short shovel passes from Josh Hansana to Brandon Sellers and Marcus Singleton.
Hansana finished with 72 yards rushing and 72 yards receiving. He also passed for 42 yards and three touchdowns. Kurtis Walls went 13-for-20 for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Jacob Duilio racked up 98 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Colby Lum had two catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns, and Mark Zinke had three catches for 75 yards.
Defensively, Nicholas McBeain recored eight tackles, a sack and an interception. He finishes the season with 115 tackles, which is the second straight year he has recorded more than 100 tackles. Senior Ethen Preston also had eight tackles Sunday as he finishes the year with 107 total tackles.
The Viking defense held Waldorf to just 259 yards of total offense, and was one late stop away from a shutout. VCSU's offense racked up 598 yards of total offense, including 308 through the air and 290 on the ground.
