The Valley City State women's basketball team started with an 11-0 run Saturday and never looked back as the Vikings picked up a 72-50 conference victory against Viterbo University.
VCSU never trailed in the contest, which was played in Aberdeen, S.D. as part of the Isreal-Strong Classic hosted by Presentation College. The Vikings finished the classic with a 2-0 record, which also included a 73-68 win over Northwestern College on Friday.
On Saturday, the Vikings broke out to an 11-0 lead and built a 25-11 lead after the first quarter. VCSU led 34-20 at halftime. Viterbo closed the deficit to 34-26 early in the third quarter but VCSU quickly pushed the lead back up to double-digits and led by as many as 26 points late in the game.
Valley City State improves to 4-1 overall and is now 2-0 in North Star Athletic Association conference play. Viterbo drops to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
The Vikings had 16 steals and forced 30 Viterbo turnovers on Saturday, which led to 30 points off turnovers for the Vikings.
Georgia Williams scored 18 points to lead four Vikings in double figures. Sara Schwanke poured in 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Lexi Lennon had 10 points and six steals, and Courtney Magnuson added 10 points for the Vikings. Courtney Dixon, Alli Vandal and Kaitlin Connor all had four rebounds each to lead VCSU on the glass.
VCSU shot 54 percent from the field (28-52) and were 46 percent on 3's (6-13). The Vikings went 10-for-14 at the free throw line.
Viterbo University finished at 37 percent overall (18-49), 17 percent on 3's (3-18) and 55 percent on free throws (11-20).
Up next: Valley City State (4-1, 2-0 NSAA) will got to Mitchell, S.D., next weekend for a pair of games at the Dakota Wesleyan Classic. VCSU plays Hastings College at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13. The Vikings then play host Dakota Wesleyan at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14.
