The Viking women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, dropping a 62-58 contest to Rocky Mountain College.
After seven ties and 11 lead changes, Rocky Mountain used a late 8-1 run to turn a 52-51 deficit into a 59-53 lead with 1:10 remaining. The Vikings cut the deficit back to 60-57 in the final minute and had possession of the ball, but a late turnover sank VCSU's chances of a comeback.
Turnovers hurt the Vikings throughout the night as VCSU committed 22 turnovers, compared to 14 for Rocky Mountain.
Valley City State drops to 2-1 overall with the non-conference loss. Rocky Mountain, an NAIA Division I team, improves to 6-1.
VCSU shot 32 percent overall (17-53), 28 percent on 3's (5-18) and 73 percent on free throws (19-26). Rocky Mountain College finished at 42 percent overall (25-60), 29 percent on 3's (6-21) and 32 percent on free throws (6-19).
Freshman Courtney Magnuson led the Vikings offense with 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Junior Georgia Williams and freshman Mackenzie Huber each poured in 13 points. Courtney Dixon added eight points off the bench.
Destiny Amezquita led Rocky Mountain with 14 points. Tenika Capouch scored 12 points and Whittney Mitchell added 11.
The Vikings started the game fast, jumping out to 14-7 and 19-10 leads during the first quarter. Rocky Mountain rallied to take a 31-28 lead into halftime. The Vikings led 45-42 after three quarters.
Up next: Valley City State (2-1, 1-0 NSAA) will hit the road for a pair of games next weekend at the Presentation College Classic in Aberdeen, S.D. The Vikings will take on Northwestern (Iowa) at 2 p.m. Friday. VCSU then plays Viterbo University in a conference game at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.
