Williams' 27 lead Vikings past Saints, 74-53

Georgia Williams scored a career-high 27 points Saturday as the Viking women's basketball team won its NSAA home opener, 74-53 over Presentation College.

The sophomore from Wulguru, Australia, knocked down six 3-pointers to pace the Viking offense. Megan Trautman added 13 points off the bench, including three 3-pointers of her own.

The Vikings led 32-25 at halftime but opened up a 26-point lead late in the second half, outscoring the Saints 42-28 over the final 20 minutes.

After shooting 39 percent in the first half, VCSU shot 46 percent in the second half to pull away. The Vikings came away with 15 offensive rebounds and forced 18 turnovers, which led to 16 more shot attempts than Presentation College.

Valley City State improves to 13-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Saints drop to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the North Star Athletic Association.

Williams finished the night 9-for-15 from the field, and was a blistering 6-for-10 from 3-point range. She also added four rebounds and three steals. Trautman went 5-for-9 overall and 3-for-7 on 3's, scoring 8 of her 13 points in the second half.

Sierra Even played an all-around game for VCSU, tallying nine points, five rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block. Point guard Sadiqah Jihad finished with six assists and eight rebounds to go with four points. The Vikings tallied assists on 19 of their 28 made baskets.

Presentation College was led by 20 points form Haley Froelich, who was 7-for-18 from the field and 3-for-10 on 3-pointers.

The Vikings finished 42 percent overall (28-66), 33 percent from the 3-point line (10-30) and 53 percent from the free-throw line (8-15).

Presentation College shot 36 percent overall (18-50), 25 percent on 3's (5-20) and 71 percent on free throws (12-17).

Up next: Valley City State (13-7, 1-1 NSAA) hosts Dakota State (10-11, 1-1 NSAA) on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. Dakota State lost to Dickinson State on Saturday, 65-58.
