The Viking women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games Friday night, closing out the first half of the season with a 66-52 victory over University of Minnesota-Morris.
It is VCSU's 12th straight victory over Minnesota-Morris, dating back to the 2008 season.
Only seven different Vikings scored in the game, but all scored at least eight points in an extremely balanced attack. Sierra Even and Megan Trautman led the way with 11 points each. Georgia Williams poured in 10 points, and both Sadiqah Jihad and Courtney Dixon added nine points. Steph Pedersen and Lexi Lennon each scored eight points.
The Vikings (8-4) led 34-29 at halftime and pulled away late in the second half for the 14-point victory at home. VCSU shot 41 percent from the field (24-59), 19 percent from the 3-point line (3-16) and 79 percent on free throws (15-19).
The Cougars shot 37 percent overall (18-49), 22 percent on 3's (4-18) and 63 percent on free throws (12-19). The Vikings forced 23 turnovers while committing 18. VCSU won a tight rebound battle, 36-34. Sierra Even had 10 rebounds, including five offensive boards, for her third double-double of the season. Pedersen added eight rebounds.
Up next: Valley City State (8-4) is off for Christmas but will resume the season Dec. 29-31 with three games in Florida.
