The Viking women's basketball team went 1-1 during a road swing through Wisconsin and Iowa this weekend. VCSU opened the trip with a 61-49 loss Saturday at Viterbo University, but closed with a big 88-49 victory at Waldorf College on Sunday.
The Vikings are now 3-2 on the season. VCSU will play Friday at Montana State University-Northern and Saturday at University of Great Falls during a road trip into Montana.
Sunday: VCSU 88, Waldorf College 49
Twelve different Vikings scored at least three points Sunday as VCSU rolled over Waldorf College, 88-49. VCSU led 37-26 at halftime, and then pulled away by outscoring Waldorf 51-23 in the second half.
The Vikings shot 56 percent from the field (31-55) and 46 percent on 3's (11-24). Steph Pedersen had a team-high 15 points and three steals to pace the Vikings. Tracie Boehmlehner and Rae Beaver both scored double-figures off the bench, posting individual career-highs in points.
Boehmlehner knocked down three 3's, finishing with 13 points and three rebounds. Beaver posted 10 points and two rebounds in the victory. Freshman Mikaela Fischer saw her first action of the season and was one of three players to score seven points, along with Lexi Lennon and Sadiqah Jihad.
As a team, the Vikings had 24 assists, recording an assist on 77 percent of their made baskets. Sierra Even led the way with five assists and Alejandra Gonzalez had four assists. Eight different players had at least two assists.
The Vikings out-rebounded Waldorf College 38-21, including a 10-3 edge in offensive rebounds.
Saturday: Viterbo 61, VCSU 49
VCSU struggled to make shots Saturday in the first game of the road trip as the Vikings lost 61-49 at Viterbo University.
Valley City State made 31 percent overall from the field (18-58). The Vikings were 2-for-16 on 3's and 11-for-26 on free throws.
Viterbo led 35-25 at halftime, but a Viking spurt midway through the second half tied the game at 44-44. The V-Hawks answered the Viking run and would pull away again down the stretch.
Sadiqah Jihad led VCSU with 14 points, four steals and five rebounds. Steph Pedersen had eight points and five rebounds, and Sierra Even added seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
Viterbo won the rebound battle 49-36. Both teams had 14 offensive rebounds.
