Viking women stifle Brandon University

  
  

The Valley City State women's basketball team opened the season with an impressive defensive performance Saturday, holding home court with a 58-44 win over Brandon University.

VCSU forced 32 turnovers and held Brandon to 37 percent shooting in the victory at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

VCSU created a bit of separation early in the first half, taking a 25-19 lead into the break. The Vikings pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 18 points late in the game.

Georgia Williams scored 18 points in her VCSU debut, leading the Viking offense. Williams shot 5-for-11 on 3-pointers, pacing an 11-for-28 team effort from beyond the arc. Sierra Even added 14 points and six rebounds and was 4-for-7 on 3's.

Megan Trautman also reached double-digits with 10 points.

The Vikings shot just 37 percent from the field (18-for-49), and 55 percent (11-for-20) on free throws. Most of the Viking offense came from the 3-pointer shot, where the Vikings shot 39 percent (11-for-28).

Brandon University shot 37 percent overall (15-for-41) and 20 percent on 3's (3-for-15). The Bobcats were 11-for-20 from the free throw line.

Up next: Valley City State is off until Nov. 7-8 when they travel to Concordia University (Neb.) for games against Doane College and Concordia.
