Matt Gable enters his third season leading the Viking Softball program in 2024-25.
The 2024-25 Vikings finished with a 26-23 record overall and an 11-9 record in conference play. VCSU advanced to the NSAA Postseason Touranment Championship game but ultimately fell to the (RV) Jimmies. Six Vikings earned All-Conference accolades including Logan Gronberg, Makenzee Stone and Ashlyn Diemert who each earned 1st Team All-Conference and Kylee Banerd, Maddy Zander and Madison Hazelton who each earned 2nd Team All-Conference. Logan Gronberg also earned the NSAA Gold Glove award at 1st base.
Valley City State finished the 2024 season with a 28-22 overall record and a 17-6 mark in conference play. Eight Vikings were named 1st Team All-Conference including Maddy Zander, Sierra Crocker, Saige Forseth, Alyssa DePoorter, Kennadi Stone, Makenzee Stone, Logan Gronberg and Joelle Lamontagne. Ashlyn Diemert and Maerin Dartnell each earned 2nd Team All-Conference, and Diemert and DePoorter each earned a NSAA Gold Glove.
Gable led the VCSU Softball program to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round in his first season as head coach. The Vikings went undefeated in the NSAA Tournament to win the conference title and earn an automatic bid to nationals. VCSU went 28-23 on the season and 18-7 in conference play.
In Gable's first season, seniors Riley Perryman and Ashlynne Copinga were each named Honorable Mention All-American while pitcher/designated player Maddy Zander was named NSAA Newcomer of the Year. VCSU earned nine All-Conference awards including 1st Team recipients Copinga, Perryman, Zander and Sierra Crocker.
Earning 2nd Team All-Conference included Alyssa DePoorter, Andrea Rodriguez, Ashlyn Diemert, Joelle Lamontagne and Marissa Hawkins. Rodriguez was also named to the NSAA Gold Glove Team.
The 2023 softball team holds school records in season RBI (365), season doubles (113) and walks (165). VCSU's 113 season doubles also ranked 2nd in the NAIA while 365 RBI ranked 4th. Copinga also set a school record with 71 runs scored and Perryman set the single-season record with 20 doubles.
Gable has a combined 14 years of experience coaching softball and baseball. He was the owner and pitching coordinator for Diamond Academy, a competitive summer softball program for high school athletes who are interested in playing college softball. He also has experience coaching at the high school and college levels, most recently as a volunteer assistant coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Gable has also competed in men's fastpitch softball for over 14 years as a pitcher and outfielder. His team won the 2007 NAFA World Series 23U Championship and Gable was named to the All-Tournament Team. He was also named to the ISC World Tournament All-Tournament Team in 2014.
Gable is a graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science, strength and conditioning and coaching.
