The 2022 cross country season marks Laquone Robinson's third season guiding the Viking cross country team in competition. He was hired as interim head coach of the VCSU track and field and cross country programs after the 2019 cross country season, starting his position on Dec. 1, 2019.
During the 2020 cross country season, Angeline Gannon was named All-Conference for the Viking women after placing 7th at the NSAA Championships. At the DSU Shane Grever Invitational on Sept. 28, the Viking men won the team title while Mason Wendt and Jasmine Barnes won the men's and women's individual titles.
Immediately prior to taking over the VCSU program, Robinson worked three seasons as an assistant coach at MSUM, and worked the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, S.D. At MSUM, Robinson’s main coaching areas were the sprints, hurdles, multi’s and javelin. He was also heavily involved in recruiting.
During his time at Augustana and MSUM, Robinson's athletes racked up numerous All-Conference honors and several All-America honors at the NCAA Division II level.
Prior to becoming a coach, Robinson was a standout athlete at MSUM from 2009-13, excelling primarily in the jumps and hurdles. He still holds six MSUM school records, including the indoor 60 meter hurdles, indoor heptathlon and outdoor 110 meter hurdles. He earned several conference and region Athlete of the Year honors during his MSUM competitive career, and was a 13-time NSIC Champion and a three-time NCAA Division II All-American.
Robinson is a native of Brooklyn Center, Minn. He earned an exercise science degree from MSUM in 2013, along with minors in coaching and strength and conditioning. While at Augustana, he completed the coursework for a master’s degree in sports administration and leadership. Robinson is married to his wife, Sara, and they reside in Valley City.
