Luke Macdonald Headshot- XC

Luke MacDonald

Prior to joining VCSU, Luke MacDonald coached cross country and track and field at Sheyenne High School in West Fargo, North Dakota. MacDonald spent three seasons as an assistant cross country coach and two seasons coaching the 400- and 800-meter events as an assistant track and field coach.

During that time, MacDonald helped coach 15 state track and field qualifiers and contributed to several record-setting performances. In 2026, Sheyenne’s 4x800-meter relay broke the school’s indoor record and recorded the second-fastest outdoor time in program history. MacDonald also helped guide the Sheyenne boys to the 2026 Eastern Dakota Conference Track and Field Championship.

In cross country, MacDonald helped coach two runners to sub-18:30 performances in the 5K at the 2025 Augustana Twilight. Both runners broke the school record during the meet. He also helped coach two top-10 finishers at the North Dakota State Cross Country Championships and five top-10 finishers at the EDC Cross Country Championships. Sheyenne’s girls won the EDC Cross Country Championship in 2024.

In addition to coaching at Sheyenne High School, MacDonald spent two years with the Sheyenne River Track and Field Club. The club was created to introduce elementary and middle school students to track and field while helping them develop foundational skills in the sport. More than 100 young athletes participated in practices and competed at meets throughout the Midwest.

MacDonald earned a degree in physical education from North Dakota State University. He lives in Fargo and works full time as an elementary special education teacher in the Fargo Public Schools.
