Karl Sorby is in his fifth season as the lead assistant coach for the Valley City State men's basketball program.
A native of Valley City and a 2013 graduate of VCSU, Sorby began his duties on Aug. 16, 2016.
He helped the Vikings to a 16-15 overall record during his first season. He was heavily involved in recruiting the 2017 class, which was the first brought in under head coach Ryan Montgomery.
The Vikings went 14-16 during Sorby's second season as lead assistant. During the year, he assumed the day-to-day head coaching duties for about a month while Montgomery took a leave of absence. Sorby helped to recruit a class of 10 student-athletes for the 2018-19 season.
During the 2019-20 season, the Vikings posted a 9-20 overall record and a 5-9 mark in conference play – finishing sixth in the NSAA. Junior forward Kevin Schramm was named 2nd Team All-Conference for the Vikings, while junior guard Logan Nelson earned Honorable Mention All-Conference.
Sorby also heads up the organization of VCSU's summer camps and 3-on-3 tournaments.
Prior to joining the VCSU staff, Sorby worked three seasons as the graduate assistant for the University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.) men's basketball program. He helped the team improve to seven wins in his first season to 19 wins in his final season. While there, he completed his master's degree in sport and physical education administration.
Sorby is a 2013 graduate of Valley City State and has strong connections to the men’s program after serving as a student assistant for three years under former VCSU coach Jeff Kaminsky.
