VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Valley City State pushed Carroll College to the final points in the second and third sets Tuesday, but the Saints came away with a 25-13, 26-24, 26-24 victory at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.
After Carroll took the opening set, VCSU responded with a stronger attack in the second. The Vikings built a 19-17 lead behind four consecutive kills from Molly Bjorneby. Carroll moved ahead 24-22, but VCSU tied the set on a Saints service error and a Gracie Schumacher ace. Carroll won the next two points to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Vikings rallied again late in the third. Trailing 22-19, VCSU tied the score at 22 on an Eden Carrier kill and an Annika Pulju service ace. Ellie Lucas later tied it at 23 with a kill, and a Carroll service error made it 24-24. The Saints scored the final two points to complete the sweep.
Bjorneby led VCSU with 10 kills while hitting .381. Mady Geist added nine kills, and Bryn Sorenson finished with six. Schumacher recorded 16 assists, seven digs and an ace, while Madden Bogenreif added 14 assists and nine digs. Hudson Zerface and Pulju shared the team lead with 11 digs apiece.
Lauren Heuiser led Carroll with 11 kills. The Saints hit .293 as a team, while the Vikings finished at .182. VCSU is now 4-10 overall and 2-5 in Frontier Conference play.
The Vikings hit the road this weekend in conference play. Friday they will be in Madison, South Dakota to take on Dakota State, Saturday they will be in Nebraska to face conference leading Bellevue.
