Vikings, Dickinson State, split final two games of the season

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Connor Martin continued his dominance in the month of April with a two-hit shutout over Dickinson State in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Vikings won 6-0 in the opener. Dickinson State took game two 15-4 in six innings.

Valley City State is 24-22-2 overall and finished 11-13-1 in the Frontier Conference which was good enough for second place and a number two seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Dickinson State ends the regular season 24-23 overall and 11-13 in the conference.

GAME 1: Valley City State 6, Dickinson State 0
The Vikings scored a run in each of the first two innings. Nick Senn drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Evan Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

VCSU added some insurance with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Brady Papineau singled to left, when the ball got by Blue Hawk left Jaden Salazar and rolled to the fence, three runners scored and Papineau ended up at second. He moved to third on a wild pitch. Rozdeba singled to center field, scoring Papineau to make it 6-0 Vikings.

Connor Martin extended his innings streak to 27 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. The lefthander picked up his second shutout in ten days and pitched his third straight complete game. Martin allowed two hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts. He now has 118 strikeouts this season which is three behind the school record.

Offensively, the Vikings had just six hits, but they made them count. Brady Papineau was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI. Kaden Rozdeba was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Alexis Velasco, Nick Senn, and Evan Gonzalez were each 1 for 3. Velasco scored once, Senn had an RBI, and Gonzalez scored and run and drove in one.

GAME 2: Dickinson State 15, Valley City State 4 F/6
After the Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the first, Dickinson State scored six times in the top of the second to take the lead and never looked back.

In the first inning, Alexis Velasco had an RBI ground out and Diesel Goya scored on a wild pitch to give VCSU an early 2-0 lead.

In the top if the second, the bases were loaded with one-out. Kadin Finders walked to score Salazar. Kade Vatnsdal doubled to left, scoring two runs. After a hit batter reloaded the bases, Ty Farwell drew a walk to bring in a run to make it 4-2 Blue Hawks. Moses Dokes singled on two to cap the scoring and make it 6-2 Dickinson State.

Valley City State got a run back in the bottom of the third on Hunter Logan's solo home run, making it 6-3 DSU.

In the top of the fourth, Dokes brought in two more runs with a home run to left field, making it 8-3 Blue Hawks.

Dickinson State added two more runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Farwell. And a run scored on an error to make it 10-3 Blue Hawks.

An RBI single by Logan in the Vikings half of the fifth make it 10-4.

In the sixth, Dickinson State scored two runs on an RBI double by Kadin Finders and an RBI single by Luis Rodriguez, making it 12-4 Blue Hawks.

Dickinson State closed out the scoring with three runs in the top of the eighth. Logan Braaten led off with a home run and Farwell delivered a two-run single to make the final 15-4.

Hunter Logan led offense by going 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI. Alexis Velasco was 1 for 5 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. His double, which led off the fifth for the Vikings, was the 20th of the season and set a new school record for doubles in a season. The former record of 19 was set by Brady Anderson in 2017. Nick Senn was 2 for 4. Cody Wielgosh and Devon Minney were both 1 for 4. Connor Hoyt was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Diesel Goya was 1 for 2 with a run scored and Brady Papineau was 1 for 2.

UP NEXT: The Vikings will be the second seed in the upcoming Frontier Conference Tournament. The Vikings will play the winner of the Dickinson State/Bismarck State game on Thursday, April 30th at 7:00 p.m. Mountain Time/8:00 p.m. Central Time. The Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark in Dickinson is the site for this year's tournament.
