Vikings beat Mayville State in Florida finale

Orlando, Fla. – Valley City State got a strong outing from Connor Martin and they offense pounded 15 hits in a 12-2 win over Mayville State in a non-conference game with the Comets in Orlando, Florida.

This was the final game of the Florida trip for VCSU. The Vikings were 7-3 in Orlando. This is the best southern trip for the Vikings since they went 5-2 in a trip to Arizona in 2022. Valley City State has won six in a row and are 13-8 on the season. Mayville State falls to 13-7.

The Vikings got all their runs on two innings. In the bottom of the second, VSCU scored five runs, all with two outs. Anthony Madsen singled in courtesy runner Merik Junker with the first run of the game. Two batter later, with the bases loaded, Hunter Logan singled to right. Evan Gonzalez and Madsen came in to make it 3-0. On the next pitch, Cody Wielgosh singled to left, scoring Diesel Goya and Logan to make it 5-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings sent eleven batters to the plate, seven scored. Wielgosh led off the inning with a single which was followed up by a Alexis Velasco double. Kaden Rozdeba grounded out ton short, scoring Wielgosh to make it 6-0. Brady Papineau singled in Velasco to make it 7-0. A sacrifice fly by Gonzalez made it 8-0. Madsen's RBI single brought in courtesy runner Junker to make it 9-0. Madsen scored on Logan's single to make it 10-0. Wielgosh singled in Goya to make it 11-0, then Velasco doubled in Logan. Wielgosh was thrown out trying to score to make 12-0 after five.

The Comets score twice in the top of the sixth on a Jack McQueen single and sacrifice fly by Keegan Neva.

Anthony Carrasquillo retired all five batters he faced with three strike outs to finish up the win. Martin, who did not allow a hit for four innings, allowed three in 5 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out eleven to improve to 3-2 on the season. At one time her retired seven batters in a row.

Seven Vikings had at least one hit, six had at least two. Diesel Goya was 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Cody Wielgosh was 3 for 4 with a run and three RBI. Anthony Madsen was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. Hunter Logan was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Alexis Velasco and Brady Papineau were both 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Nick Senn was 1 for 3. Kaden Rozdeba had an RBI while Evan Gonzalez had a run scored and an RBI.

UP NEXT: The Vikings head back north next week and will play in the Frontier Conference Round Robin in Sioux Fall, South Dakota next Saturday and Sunday. They play Bismarck State and Dakota State on Saturday and Dickinson State and Bellevue on Sunday.
