Montana State-Northern slow down Vikings

HAVRE, MONT – Valley City State got off to a good start and visions of an upset, but Montana State-Northern had other ideas and came back with a 91-58 win over the Vikings in Frontier Conference Men's basketball in Havre, Montana on Saturday.

Valley City State is now 9-14 overall and 5-3 in the Frontier Conference. Montana State-Northern is 16-8 overall and 11-7 in the conference.

The Vikings hit their first four shots and led 11-6 a little over two minutes into the game. After the first miss of the game, Kaleb Larson hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Vikings a 15-9 lead with 16:04 to go in the first half. Over the next five minutes, the Northern Lights went on a 21-2 run to take a 13-point lead. A jumper by Tracen Jilot made it 30-17 MSUN with 10:56 to go in the first half.

The closest the Vikings would get the rest of the way was eleven points at that came when JR Cison made a basket at the 10:40 mark to make it a 30-19 game. The Northern Lights ended the half on a 17-9 run to make it 47-28 heading to the locker room.

The lead stayed between 16 and 22 points in the early stages of the second half. After Valley City's Jaelyn Johnson made two free throws, MSUN would go on a 14-4 run to make the score 76-46. The final was 91-58 Northern Lights.

JR Cison led Valley City State with 24 points. Kaleb Larson scored nine points; Jaelyn Johnson added eight points and six rebounds while Alex Lester scored seven points and added six boards.

UP NEXT: The Vikings head back to North Dakota to finish off the road schedule next weekend with games at Dickinson State on Friday night and Bismarck State College on Saturday. Tip off both nights is schedule for 7pm.
