SIOUX CENTER, IOWA – The Valley City State University Vikings softball team picked up one win today at the American State Bank Sports Complex Softball Classic at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Vikings beat Briar Cliff 5-2. Then lost to host Dordt 9-4.
The Vikings are 2-4 on the season. Briar Cliff is 1-4 on the season. Dordt is now 5-0.
GAME 1: Valley City State 5, Briar Cliff 2
Maddie Hazelton tossed a complete game three-hitter as Valley City State scored two in the top of the first and held on for the 5-2 win.
The Vikings got an RBI double from
Kylee Banerd and an RBI single from
Kennadi Stone in the first inning to get the Vikings off to a good start.
Briar Cliff got an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk.
Avery Kuklinski singled in Madden Bogenrief in the top of the sixth to make it 3-1. An RBI double by
Olivia Kalbus and an RBI ground out in the top of the seventh made it 5-1.
In the bottom seventh, Briar Cliff threated by loading the bases with nobody out. Lauryn Mattox hit a sacrifice fly to score Shelby Blankenship to make it 5-2 with the tying run at then plate. But Hazelton struck out Aubrey White to end the game.
Kylee Banerd was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Madden Bogenreif was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Pascale Kihn, and
Kennadi Stone, were both 2 for 4 with a run scored. Stone had a double and drove in two runs.
Jenna Decker, and
Avery Kuklinski were both one for three. Kuklinski drove in one run.
Reagan Mieras and
Maddy Hazelton were both 1 for 4, Mieras drove in a run.
Hazelton allowed one earned run with six walks and a career high 13 strikeouts.
GAME 2: Dordt 9, Valley City State 4
Chloe Kruez had a triple, a home run, and drove in two runs as Dordt defeated Valley City State 9-4 at the ASB Softball Classic.
The Defenders scored two in the second inning on a two-run double by Sumaya Edwards. They would add three more in the third on a solo home run by Kreuz and a two-run homer by Annabelle Hensley.
The got three runs back in the fourth on a three-run home run by
Kennadi Stone. It was her second of the season.
Anna Kowalyk scored on a passed ball in the fifth to make it 5-4.
Dordt would two in the sixth on an RBI triple by Tera Lynn Price and a triple by Kreuz.
The Defenders would close out the scoring with RBI doubles by Addison Stephenson-Roy and Edwards in the seventh to make the final 9-4.
Pascale Kihn was 2 for 3 with a run scored for Valley City State.
Kennadi Stone was 1 for 3 with the home run and three RBI.
Anna Kowalyk was 1 for 2 with a run scored and
Jenna Decker was 1 for 3.
Grace Folkema took the loss in the circle. She yielded four runs on three hits over two innings. She walked one and struck out one.
UP NEXT: Valley City State will face old North Star Association foe Waldorf at 9am Saturday. And the College of Saint Mary's in Nebraska at 11am in Sioux Center, Iowa.
