Vikings seek first conference win in rivalry matchup at Mayville State

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Valley City State University football team will look to secure its first conference win Saturday when the Vikings travel to Mayville State for a rivalry matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville, N.D.

The Vikings enter the contest following a narrow 31-24 loss at Rocky Mountain College, where they erased a 17-point deficit and took a fourth-quarter lead before allowing the deciding touchdown with 19 seconds remaining.

Mayville State enters Saturday with a 4-2 overall record after its four-game winning streak ended in a 28-6 loss to Dickinson State. The Comets were limited to 64 passing yards but gained 253 yards on the ground, finishing with 317 yards of total offense.

For VCSU, a stronger start could help turn another competitive performance into a victory. The Vikings have demonstrated their ability to put points on the board, but an early lead would give them an opportunity to dictate the pace rather than battle from behind.

Last week in Montana, VCSU trailed 20-9 at halftime before its defense held Rocky Mountain scoreless throughout the third quarter and nearly eight minutes into the fourth. That stretch helped the Vikings rally and eventually take a 24-23 lead.

Anthony Madsen led the Viking defense with 12 tackles, including eight solo stops and a tackle for loss. Solomon Harris added six tackles and an interception.

Brayden Medeiros recorded his second consecutive 300-yard passing game, completing 27 of 43 passes for 324 yards without an interception. Exavian Westbrook and Jake Deutsch each caught eight passes, finishing with 113 and 103 receiving yards, respectively. Laggarius Marshell paced the ground game with 80 yards on 20 carries.

VCSU will look to build on last season's success against the Comets. The Vikings earned a 21-0 shutout victory in Valley City, limiting Mayville State to 22 passing yards and one conversion in seven fourth-down attempts. VCSU finished with 220 yards of total offense in the win.

Fans traveling to Mayville should note that admission at the gate is cash only. Parking is available at the baseball field directly across from Jerome Berg Field.
