Football heads west for rematch with Dickinson State

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Valley City State football will look to complete a season sweep of Dickinson State when the Vikings travel west for a Frontier Conference matchup Saturday, Oct. 24.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Central at the Henry Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson, N.D. VCSU won the teams' first meeting 28-25 during the Ag Bowl at Lokken Stadium on Dacotah Bank Field on Sept. 3.

The Vikings enter Saturday at 1-6 overall and 0-3 in Frontier East Division play, while Dickinson State holds a 3-5 overall record and a 2-1 division mark. Both teams are looking to rebound after losses last weekend.

VCSU is coming off a 42-21 loss to Dakota State in which the Vikings twice tied the game in the second quarter and pulled within a touchdown early in the third. Freshman quarterback Brayden Medeiros completed 20 of 30 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns, while Laggarius Marshell scored once on the ground and once through the air.

Jonathan Hunter provided the Vikings' biggest offensive play with a 53-yard touchdown reception and finished with three catches for 91 yards. Exavian Westbrook added four receptions for 62 yards, and Tyson Ball caught four passes for 47 yards.

During last week's game, Exavian Westbrook climbed to No. 2 all-time in VCSU football history with 1,323 career kickoff return yards. The Orlando, Florida, native continues to make his mark in the Viking record books, one return at a time.

Saturday's rematch brings another opportunity against a familiar opponent. In September, VCSU erased an early 10-0 deficit with 28 consecutive points before holding off Dickinson State's late rally. The Vikings will seek a similar result as they pursue their first division victory.

Dickinson State fell 31-10 to Rocky Mountain last Saturday despite a season-high 307 passing yards from quarterback Hudsen Grovom. Adrien Calderon caught nine passes for 161 yards. The Blue Hawks have also created opportunities defensively, forcing 15 turnovers through eight games, including nine interceptions.
