Vikings fall to Dakota State in Wahpeton

WAHPETON, N.D. - Valley City State had its three-game winning streak snapped by Dakota State as the Trojans picked up a 84-60 win over the Vikings in Frontier Conference Men's basketball Friday in Wahpeton.

The Vikings are now 8-12 overall and 4-11 in the Frontier Conference. Dakota State improves to 15-5 overall and 10-5 in the conference.

Dakota State scored the first seven points of the game to take the early lead. Brayden Pankonen hit a three-pointer to give the Trojans 7-0 at the 18:14 mark of the first half. The Vikings then went on a 15-4 run to take four-point lead five minutes later. A basket by JR Cison gave Valley City State a 15-11 lead with 13:10 to go in the opening half.

Dakota State went on a 21-2 run over the next nine minutes to take a 15-point lead. A three-pointer by Kaleel Sutton-White made it 32-17 Trojans with 4:05 to go in the first half. Valley City State would get the lead down to nine with an 9-0. A Cison bucket inside made it 32-24 Trojans with 1:28 to go in the first half. Dakota State would lead 37-24 at the half.

The Vikings came out scoring the first six points of the second half to cut the lead down to seven. An easy layup by Logan Deal of a nice pass from Alex Lester mad it 37-30 a minute into the second half. That would be as close as the Vikings would get. The teams exchanged baskets to keep it a seven-point game. A floater in the lane by Cison made it 39-32 Trojans with 18:22 to go in the second half.

That is when Dakota State went on a game clinching run. The Trojans scored the next 13 points to take a 20-point lead. A fade way 15-footer by Nathan Ojukwu made it 52-32 with 14:59 to go in the half.
The lead would reach 25-points later in the half as the Trojans pulled away for an 84-60 win.

JR Cison lead the Vikings with 23 points. Kaleb Larson had ten points, three assists, and three steals for the Vikings. Alex Lester had eight points and a career high 15 rebounds.

UP NEXT: Valley City State will take on Bellevue University Saturday, January 31st at the Memorial Auditorium on the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
