Women's basketball score 100 in win over Mayville State

MOORHEAD, MINN. – Viking women's basketball hit the century mark for the first time in a Frontier Conference game en route to a 100-57 win over Mayville State University on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Vikings improved to 6-12 overall and 3-11 in Frontier Conference games. Mayville State is now 1-17 and 0-14 in Frontier Conference games.

Early in the first, the Vikings trailed 7-4 after the Comets scored two from a Laela Jensen basket. From there, the Vikings would soon tie the game at 10-10 after earning four points from Abby Aslesen and two from Tiyana Schwinghammer. Mayville would hit a three-pointer scored by Jensen. Responding on the offensive end, Olivia Backus would tie the game with a three-pointer of her own.

One possession later, Schwinghammer would give the Vikings a lead they would not relinquish. Closing the first quarter with a 24-18 lead, the Vikings had points from five players, 13 from Schwinghammer.

The Vikings' offense exploded in the second quarter, tallying 26 points while holding the Comets to just 10 points. At halftime, the Vikings led, 50-28, with eight players recording points. Schwinghammer led the team with 16 points after knocking down three with just a few seconds left in the first half. Ellie Braaten and Aubrey Prunty both had 7 points to close the half.

VCSU shot 19-for-39 from the field, 8-for-19 from the three-point line, and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. The Vikings had assists on 14-of-19 of their field goals, passing the ball exceptionally well. The Comets shot 9-for-27 from the field, 4-for-10 from the three-point line, and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.

The third quarter saw both scoring with efficiency. The Vikings outscored the Comets, 22-18, growing their lead to 72-46. VCSU had eight players record points in the third quarter alone. Early in the fourth, Hadley Baune tallied five points, scoring on one three-pointer and a pair of free throws a possession later. The Vikings continued to pour in threes on open looks, including contributions from Cassidy Schute, Sophie Bachmeier, and Liz Lukken. VCSU tallied its 100th point after Liz Lukken hit a pair of free throws late in the fourth quarter. The game would finish with a final score of 100-57.

The Vikings closed the game shooting 33-for-79 from the field, 11-33 from the three-point line, and 23-for-30 from the free throw line. They were led by Schwinghammer with 18 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Tilda Mauritzson followed with 12 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Every Viking who checked into the game recorded points in the contest. The Comets shot 16-for-57 from the field, 5-for-21 from the three-point line, and 20-for-23 from the free-throw line.
