Women's Basketball fall to Dickinson State in Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Valley City State University women's basketball fell to the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks on Saturday, Jan. 17, 72-61, while hosting at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The Vikings fall to 5-11 overall and are 2-10 in Frontier Conference games. The Blue Hawks improve to 6-11 overall and are 4-9 in Frontier Conference games.

Dickinson State started the game scoring off a steal, followed by a J'ell Garfield three-pointer. They quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Vikings got on the board. Valley City then scored six straight on an Abby Aslesen three-pointer, along with three free throws made, two from Tiyana Schwinghammer and one from JayCee Richter. Rallying later in the first quarter, Oliva Backus drove the paint, scoring a layup to help the Vikings close the quarter down two points at 13-11.

The Blue Hawks started the second quarter outscoring the Vikings 7-2, growing their lead to 20-13. A few possessions later, the lead is 26-15. The Vikings hung on during the middle of the second quarter. Down 11 at 30-19, VCSU, the Vikings would fight hard narrowing the gap to eight, closing the half at 36-28.

At the half, the Vikings shot 10-for-34 from the field, 2-for-13 from the three-point line, and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Dickinson State shot 12-for-30 from the field, 3-for-12 from the three-point line, and 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

The Vikings opened the third quarter scoring four, getting within four of the Blue Hawks at 36-32. From there, the Blue Hawks once again peeled away, growing their lead to nine at 46-37. Holding a steady lead, the Vikings narrowed the gap to four about halfway through the fourth quarter. After the DSU hit two three-pointers in a row, bringing the lead back to 10, where they would hold on to the rest of the game.

Closing the contest, the Vikings shot 20-for-64 from the field, 4-for-24 from the three-point line, and 17-for-22 from the free throw line. Dickinson State shot 24-56 from the field, 7-23 from the three-point line, and 17-18 from the free throw line. Oliva Backus led the Vikings, scoring 16. Ellie Braaten scored 14, along with five rebounds and four steals.

UP NEXT: The Vikings will host Bismarck State College on Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Jamestown Civic Center at 2:00 p.m.
