BISMARCK, N.D. – Bismarck State scored nine runs in the third inning on the way to a 13-6 win over Valley City State in college baseball Wednesday, September 24
th in Bismarck.
The Vikings got off to a good start with two runs in the top of the first.
Nicholas Senn led off the game with a walk for VCSU, then stole second. With one out,
Alexis Velasco doubled, scoring Senn to make it 1-0 Vikings.
Kaden Rozdeba singled and Velasco scored on an error by Mystic shortstop Kaeden Wilcox, making the score 2-0 VCSU.
Bismarck State took the lead in the bottom of the first when starting pitcher Cole Shirley helped his when he homerd with two men aboard to make it 3-2 Mystics.
Valley City State came back to tie the game in the top of the second. With two outs and
Grady Shipman at second,
Nicholas Senn reached on an error by left fielder Karson Haney. Shipman came in to score to tie the game at 3-3.
Takao Cookson retired the Mystics 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second. The came the bottom of the third. With one out and the bases loaded, Alec Vincent doubled, clearing the bases to make it 6-3 BSC. With two outs and runners at second and third, Evan Fuchs singled in two, making it 8-3. Then with the bases loaded again, Wilcox tripled, scoring three runners to make it 11-3 Bismarck State. The batter, Brayden Bunnell singled in Wilcox to cap the inning and make it 12-3 Mystics.
The Vikings got two back in the top of the sixth.
Porter Jorgenson walked to start the inning, then scored on
Cam Pero's triple. Pero would come on a balk to make it 12-5 Bismarck State.
In the bottom of the sixth, BSC scored a run when Bunnell scored on a balk to make it 13-5.
Valley City State got the final tally in the game in the top of the ninth.
Brady Papineau led off the inning with a double, then scored on
Cody Wielgosh's single, making the final score 13-6.
Cam Pero led the offense by going 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Porter Jorgenson was 1 for 3 with a run scored.
Cody Wielgosh was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Kaden Rozdeba and
Brady Papineau were both 1 for 4.
Alexis Velasco was 1 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Takao Cookson took the loss allowing nine hits and ten earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four.
Connor Martin allowed three hits and three earned runs in three innings. He walked three and struck out five.
Eli Chabot finished up pitching 2 1/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts.
The Vikings are 0-1 on the season and will travel to Dickinson State for a doubleheader on Monday, September 29
th before hosting Mayville State Wednesday, October 1
st at 2:00 p.m. at Charlie Brown Memorial Field.
