Vikings pick up four set win over Rocky Mountain College

inning track Wednesday with a four-set win over Rocky Mountain College. The Vikings won 25-14, 17-25, 25-22, 25-19.

With the win, Valley City State is now 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the Frontier Conference.

The Vikings opened strong in the first set. Valley City State never trailed in the set, though they were tied three times at 1, 2, and 3. Three unforced errors by Rocky Mountain gave the Vikings a 6-3 lead. A kill by the Bears' Josie West made it 6-4, VCSU went on a 10-1 run to take control of the set. A service error by RMC started the run, then a service ace by Madden Bogenreif capped the run, making the score 16-5 VCSU. The closest Rocky Mountain could get was seven points at 20-13. But a 5-1 run by the Vikings ended the set. Danielle Hagler's fifth kill of the set made it 25-14.

The second set was opposite of the first as Rocky Mountain never trailed in the set. The two teams were briefly tied at 1-1 before the Bears went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead. The biggest lead in the set for RMC was eight points at 19-11. A Macy Fridgen kill made it 22-17 but the Bears would score the last three points to win the set 25-17.

In the pivotal third set, Valley City State would lead 2-1. The Bears would go on a 7-2 run to take an 8-4 lead. A 5-1 run gave Rocky Mountain a 14-8 lead. They would hold a six-point lead three more times, the last coming ay 18-12. That's when the Vikings started their comeback. A kill by Hagler started a 9-3 run for VCSU and a kill by Gracie Schumacher ended it with the Vikings and Bears tied at 21. After a point for RMC, Valley City State finished off the set with three straight blocks by Morgan Freije and Rosie Anderson to take the set 25-22. The Vikings would finish off the set with a 13-4 run.

The Bears would get the momentum back on their side to start the fourth set with a 5-2 run at the beginning of the set. But the Vikings would score five straight points, led by the defense with blocks from Freije and Emma Lucas on back-to-back attacks to give VCSU a 6-5 lead. The Vikings never trailed the rest of the way and a kill by Emma Lucas capped off the set with the Vikings winning 25-19.

Danielle Hagler led the way with 15 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Macy Fridgen and Morgan Freije had nine kills each. Freije would add ten blocks (10 assist). Emma Lucas chipped in six kills and six blocks. Madden Bogenreif had 26 assists and Grace Schumacher had twelve. Schumacher would add 16 digs for the double-double. Bogenreif had nine. The defense was a big key in the match for VCSU. As a team they had 106 digs. JayCee Richter had 36, Delani Clarke had 19, and Annika Pulju added 18. They also had 26 total blocks. Rosie Anderson had five while Hagler and Fridgen each had three.
