DICKINSON, N.D. – The University of Jamestown ended Valley City State's softball season Sunday after Hope Ransome pitched a complete game shutout to take the NSAA Championship, 7-0.
VCSU concludes the season with a 26-23 record overall and an 11-9 mark in conference play. The University of Jamestown improves to 35-15 on the season and went 16-4 on the NSAA season. The Jimmies will advance to the NAIA Opening Round played May 15-17 at campus sites.
Jamestown's Ransome held the Vikings to just three hits Sunday en route to her complete game shutout. The Jimmies used a big second inning to pull away with a lead they would not give up.
Jamestown opened scoring on Tori Olson's RBI bunt and expanded its lead on Sydney Grendler's 2-run double. Lauren Weigel and Maddie Spaeth each drove in a run, and Sidnie Aasen scored on a passed ball in the Jimmies' big second inning. Jamestown added a run in the third inning on a Viking error to hold a 7-0 lead the Jimmies would hold onto the rest of the way.
Ransome and the Jimmie defense wouldn't give the Vikings a chance. The sophomore pitcher allowed just three hits, did not walk a single batter and struck out two Vikings Sunday.
VCSU's
Maddy Zander got the loss in the circle after allowing five runs on three hits in 1 inning pitched. She walked three and struck out two.
Madison Hazelton pitched 5 relief innings and allowed two runs on four hits. She did not walk a single batter and struck out three.
Katelyn MacNeill finished with two hits and
Avery Kuklinski added one for the Vikings Sunday.
Jamestown's Kaitlin McCartney finished with two hits for the Jimmies while Grendler drove in three runs and Rylie Welk swiped the plate twice.
