TUCSON, ARIZ. – Valley City State dropped a pair of games Wednesday in Tucson after a two-hour rain delay. VCSU dropped its game to Avila, 4-1, and then fell 8-3 to Concordia (Neb.).
VCSU drops to 9-12 on the season and 4-5 at the Tucson Invitational. The Vikings round out its stint in Tucson Thursday afternoon. VCSU will face Simpson College at 1 p.m. CT and Nelson University at 3:30 p.m. CT.
Avila 4, VCSU 1
Avila's starting pitcher McKayla Cotton held the Vikings to just three hits Wednesday as the Eagles took a 4-1 win.

Lauren Nixon each recorded a hit for VCSU but it was not enough.
Avila posted seven total hits in the game including a double from Myra Megli. With the game tied 1-1 late in the game, Avila scored three runs in the sixth inning on RBI singles from Megli, Emily Branson and Julia Douglass to pull away. Megli and Douglass each finished with two hits for the Eagles while Megli drove in two of Avila's runs.
Cooper Klaahsen started in the circle for the Vikings and worked 5 complete innings. She allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five. She did not walk a single batter.
Madison Hazelton got the loss after pitching 1 inning in relief and allowing three runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.
Concordia (Neb.) 8, VCSU 3
Despite two Viking home runs in the game, Concordia used nine total hits – including three for extra bases – to defeat VCSU 8-3 Wednesday.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the first inning to get on the board early. VCSU cut the lead in half on
Logan Gronberg's solo homer in the bottom half of the first inning. Concordia later expanded its lead to 4-1 on Kylie Shottenkirk's 2-run triple and later 7-1 on a 2-run triple by Keira Farritor.
Valley City State's
Kennadi Stone helped the offense with a 2-run homer in the sixth inning but that would be all the Vikings could bring home.
VCSU finished with three hits in the game, two of which were home runs.

She allowed four runs on four hits, walked one and struck out one. Klaahsen tossed 3 innings in relief and allowed four runs on five hits while walking just one.
