BELLEVUE, NEB. – Bellevue shot 54 percent from the floor and had many high percentage shots on the way to a 90-74 win over Valley City State in Frontier Conference Men's basketball in Bellevue, Nebraska.
The Vikings are now 4-4 overall and 0-4 in the Frontier Conference. Bellevue is now 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
In the first half, there were two ties and three lead changes in the first 4:34 of the game. A three-pointer by Bellevue's JJ Montgomery was the first lead change, giving the Bruins a 3-2 two minutes into the game.
Joel Nelson would give the Vikings the lead back 43 seconds later with a layup to make it 4-3 Valley City State. A
Nez Chehade jump shot would make it 6-3 Valley City State with 16:55 to go in the first half. Bellevue would go on a 6-0 run to retake the lead. Connor Mohr's three-pointer made it 9-6 Bellevue with 16:15 to go. A three-pointer by the Vikings
Kaleb Larson would tie the game at 9-9 with 15:26 to go in the half.
The rest of the first half belonged to the Bruins. Jayden Philips' three-pointer would give the Bellevue a 12-9 lead and they would not give up the lead the rest of the way. The Bruins went on a 13-2 run to take an eleven-point lead. It was another three-pointer from Philips to make it 22-11 with 10:54 to go in the first half.
Taylor Bryant-Frey hit a three-pointer to get the lead down to eight at 29-21 with 6:38 to go in the first half.
The Bruins would end the half on a 15-6 run to take a 44-27 lead heading into the locker room.
Jermaine Haliburton made a layup to state the second half scoring, giving the Bruins their largest lead at 49-27 with 19:22 to go in the second half. Each team then went on 7-0 runs; Valley City State's came first. A three-pointer by Bryant-Frey capped the Vikings run and cut the lead to 13 at 49-36 with 17:01 to go in the half. The Bruins then went on their 7-0 run to take a 20-point lead. Mohr's layup off a steal made it 56-36 Bruins with 14:45 to go in the second half. It was back-and-forth for several minutes as the lead for Bellevue stayed between 17 and 20 points for the next 3:25 seconds. Bellevue biggest lead came on the heels of a 13-4 run. Jonathan Walker layup capped the run and made the score 77-50 with 8:19 to go in the second half.
The Vikings got back-to-back three-pointers by
Kaleb Larson and
Jaelyn Johnson were part of an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 79-58. Valley City State got the lead under 20 with a 10-0 run. Bryant-Frey made a layup to make the score 86-70 with 2:06 to go in the second half. That would be as close as the Vikings would get as the Bruins picked up a 90-74 win.
The Vikings, who outscored the Bellevue 47-46 in the second half, were led by
JR Cison with 17 points.
Taylor Bryant-Frey had 15 points.
Nez Chehade scored ten points and added five assists. Jaelyn Johnsoln had nine points and a team high eight rebounds.
Joel Nelson and
Logan Deal each had seven points and five rebounds.
Kaleb Larson finished with six points.
