Vikings improve to 2-0 with win over Mount Marty

Box Score YANKTON, S.D. – Valley City State used a 21-8 run in the first half to take a 13 point lead, then held off a late second half rally to pull out an 83-76 win over Mount Marty in college Men's basketball in Yankton, South Dakota Friday night.

The Vikings are now 2-0 on the season. The Lancers fall to 1-3.

The Vikings score the first five point of the game to take the early lead on the Lancers. A three-pointer by Kaleb Larson made it 5-0 Vikings 75 seconds into the game. Mount Marty would come back and go on an16-6 run over the next 6:47 to take a five-point lead. Two free throws by Mac Ryken made it 16-11 Lances with 12:06 to go in the first half. The two teams would go back and forth with ties at 16, 18, and 20. A layup by Logan Deal gave Valley City State a 22-20 lead and started a 21-8 run. The run ended with a jumper by Sam Kobbervig to make it 41-28 with 2:46 top go in the first half.

But Mounty Marty ended the half on a 9-0 run, then continued the run into the second. A layup by the Lancers' Jake Jensen made capped what would be a 13-0 run for the home team to tie the game at 41 just 35 second into the second half.

The Lancers would never get the lead as Valley City State went on a 9-0 run to retake the lead and never gave it up. A basket inside by Jaelyn Johnson broke the tie and gave the Vikings the lead for good at 43-41. The run was capped off by two free throws by Deal that made it 50-41 Vikings with 17:37 to go in the second half.

The lead stayed between two and nine points the rest of the game. The Lancers would use a 6-1 run over a two-minute span to cut the lead to three. A layup by Deegan Williams made it 79-76 VCSU with 13 seconds to go in the game. But Larson and JR Cison combined to go 4-4 at the free throw line in the last 13 seconds to seal the win.

Cison led all scorers with 21 points and added three assists and two steals. Logan Deal had 14 points and a game high eight rebounds for the Vikings. Also in double figures was Alex Lester with twelve points and Taylor Bryant-Frye with ten points. Bryant-Frey would also add six rebounds.

The Vikings out rebounded Mount Marty 37-19. They would shoot 51 percent from the floor and hit on 25 or 31 free throws.

Deegan Williams led the Lancers with 18 points while Jake Jensen chipped in 16 points.
