VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Valley City State University women's basketball team took down the University of Minnesota Morris on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The Vikings move to 3-0 on the season after their three home wins over Providence University College and, most recently, UMM.
The first quarter was a low-scoring defensive matchup highlighted by a two from
Abby Aslesen and threes by
Tiyana Schwinghammer and
Delaney Cotton. Cotton closed out the first quarter with a pair of free throws, making the score 10-6 after the end of the first quarter.
The Viking offense kicked into high gear in the second outscoring the Cougars 27-11. By the end of the second quarter, VCSU was led by
Olivia Backus, who scored nine of the team's 37 points. She was trailed by
Ellie Braaten and
Abby Aslesen with six points each. At halftime, the Vikings led 37-17, holding the UMM offense to just six total field goals.
The third and fourth quarters were much of the same for the Vikings. They stood strong, playing swarming defense while generating offense on the other end. VCSU closed the third quarter leading 61-31, and later the game with a final score of 77-42.
Leading the Vikings at the end of the night was Schwinghammer after scoring 20 points in 20 minutes. She also tallied a team-leading four steals along with four rebounds. Schwinghammer shot 6-for-6 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line. Junior guard
Olivia Backus scored 15 points on the evening, along with two assists and steals. Leading the team in blocks and rebounds sophomore, Aslesen grabbed five boards and one block during the evening.
UMM was led by Itzel Salazar, who went 2-for-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. She scored 7 points. Maddy Grove grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.
