Vikings face tough road test in regular season finale

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Valley City State football team hits the road this weekend to wrap up the regular season. The Vikings head to Butte, Montana to take on #4 Montana Tech at Alumni Coliseum.

The Vikings are 6-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Frontier Conference, currently in tied for third in the East Division with Rocky Mountain College. The Orediggers are 10-0 on the season and 5-0 in the conference. They have clinched the East Division title and a berth in the NAIA Football Championship Series playoffs.

The Vikings are coming off a 13-7 win over Montana State-Northern last weekend. VCSU scored with 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, then got a big turnover to clinch the win over the Northern Lights on the road. Devyne Pearson led the way with 88 yards rushing on 19 carries and a touchdown. The defense continues to play well, winning the turnover stat line with a plus-1 and added four sacks.

Montana Tech defeated Dickinson State in their last game, 31-7. The Orediggers held the Blue Hawks to 83 yards rushing in the game.

Both defenses are top 15 in the nation in scoring defense. Montana Tech is ninth, allowing 15.5 points per game. Valley City State is 13th, allowing 16.7 points per game.

Joey Cave leads the Vikings offense with 1,089 yards passing and ten touchdowns and 407 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Jake Deutsch leads the receiving corps with 37 receptions for 438 yards and five touchdowns, all career highs.

Defensively, the Vikings are in tackles by Gavin Gerhardt with 76 total tackles. TaQuez Chatman leads the team with 8.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks. Fafo Lefano leads the team with four interceptions.

The Orediggers are led on the ground by Wykece Johnson and his 765 yards and ten touchdowns. Jarrett Wilson has thrown for 1,995 yards and 22 touchdowns along with another 357 yards rushing. Levi Torgerson leads the receiving corps with 73 catches for 924 yards and ten touchdowns.
