VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Valley City State Vikings are back in action for the penultimate home game of the season. The Vikings host Mayville State Saturday at Dacotah Bank Field at Lokken Stadium.
The Vikings are coming off a tough 31-21 loss to Rocky Mountain College last week.
Joey Cave threw two touchdown passes and
Devyne Pearson had 77 yards rushing.
The defense was led by
Fafo Lefano who had two interceptions and a fumble recovery that he ran in for a touchdown.
Gavin Gerhardt had twelve tackles while
Moziah Rogers-Tivao and
Aiden Russell each had eight.
The Vikings come into the contest 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Frontier Conference.
Mayville State is coming off a thrilling 34-32 triple-overtime win over Dickinson State on Saturday. It was the first time the Comets had defeated the Blue Hawks since 2011. The Comets have won three of the last four games.
Last season, VCSU and Mayville State split the two games with each team winning on their home turf. The Comets won 16-10 in Mayville while the Vikings returned the favor with a 10-6 win at Lokken Stadium. In that game,
Trent Finney caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from
Avery Thorsgard with 545 seconds to go in the third quarter to give the Vikings the lead. Late in the fourth quarter,
Yzan Lorenzo kicked a 38-yard field goal with 2:44 remaining in the game to seal the win for the Vikings.
In the last ten meetings, the Vikings have won eight of those ten. The last time the Comets won in Valley City was a 14-13 win back in 2015.
