BISMARCK, N.D. – The Valley City State University volleyball team finished their week with a 3-0 win over the Bismarck State College Mystics. The Vikings defeated the Mystics 25-12, 25-21, and 25-23.
The Vikings improve their record to 12-13 overall and are now 10-10 in Frontier Conference Games. The Mystics are now 4-20 overall and 2-17 in Frontier Conference games.
The Vikings took the first set 25-12. They jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after kills by
Danielle Hagler and
Emma Lucas. Those kills were accompanied by a pair of attack errors by Bismarck State and an assisted block by
Macy Fridgen and
Morgan Freije. Later, with the score at 6-4, the Vikings went on a 10-0 run, forcing BSC to use both of their timeouts, leading 15-4. The Vikings closed the first set strong, finishing with a Freije kill, making it 25-12.
The second set was a much closer contest, five ties and one lead change. BCS opened the set, gaining a 3-0 lead. The Vikings would later tie the match at 7-7 with the help of a kill by
Macy Fridgen,
Gracie Schumacher, and
Danielle Hagler. The Vikings would take the lead at 9-8 after another Hagler kill. The rest of the set, the Vikings and Mystics would exchange points, maintaining a lead of a couple of points. The Vikings would put away the set 25-21 with a block by
Rosie Anderson and
Morgan Freije.
BSC led for the first half of the third set, steadily holding a 2–3-point lead. The Vikings found some momentum, going on a 3-0 run that later tied the game at 18-18, the first tie since 3-3.
Molly Bjorneby served up an ace, giving the Vikings a 20-19 lead, their first in the set. With a kill by Fridgen, they led 22-19. The Viking briefly stalled out on match point but finished the match with a Fridgen kill.
The Vikings were led by
Morgan Freije, who tallied 13 kills on the night, hitting 44 percent. Freije also tallied six assisted blocks.
JayCee Richter once again led the team in digs with 26, increasing the school record to 2,027 career digs.
Gracie Schumacher had 17 assists while
Madden Bogenreif had 14.
