MADISON, S.D – Dakota State ended its two-match losing streak while stopping Valley City State's two match winning streak with a straight set win on Wednesday in Madison, South Dakota. The Trojans won 25-16, 25-17, 25-15.
The Vikings are now 406 in the Frontier and 6-9 overall. Dakota State is 10-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
The Vikings got off to a good start in the opening set, holding leads at 2-1, 7-6, 9-8, 10-8. Ann unforced error by the Trojans gave VCSU the 10-8 lead. A kill by
Danielle Hagler would make it 11-9 Vikings, that is when Dakota State started its comeback. The Trojans would end the set on a 16-5 run, including eight points in a row, to take the set 25-16.
Dakota State used that momentum to jump out to a 5-1 lead in the second set. The Vikings did get to within one point with a 4-1 run. A service ace by
JayCee Richter made it 6-5 Dakota State. But that would as close as the Vikings would get. The Trojan defense kept Valley City State from stringing together any long runs. The most VCSU could do was two points in a row, and they did that four times in the set. After a 3-0 run by Dakota State, the lead stayed between three and six points for several volleys. The biggest lead in the set for the Trojans was eight and that came towards the end of the set at 23-15, 24-16 and 25-17.
Dakota State jumped out to another 5-1 start in the third set. The lead would get to six at 8-2. A kill by
Macy Fridgen made it 8-3, that would be as close as the Vikings would get the rest of the match. Dakota State went on a 5-0 run to open a 13-3 lead, which was the biggest lead of the set for the Trojans. The lead would be eight, nine or ten points the rest of the way as the two teams would go back and forth. The Vikings scored two points in a row twice, both times it got the lead down to eight points. Dakota State did score three in a to get back to a ten-point lead at 21-11. But the two teams would alternate points from there making the final 25-15.
Danielle Hagler led the Vikings with nine kills and .400 hitting percentage.
Morgan Freije had seven kills and a team high three blocks (1 solo, 2 assist).
Macy Fridgen had five kills and
Emma Lucas had four kills.
Gracie Schumacher had 13 assists and five digs.
Madden Bogenreif had ten assists and eight digs.
JayCee Richter had 14 digs while
Delani Clarke chipped in ten.
