Viking women fall to #24 Jamestown at home

VALLEY CITY – Three Vikings scored in double figures Friday night for the Valley City State women's basketball team, but it wasn't enough as No. 24 Jamestown defeated VCSU 72-54 Friday night at The Bubble.
 
The Jimmies sank 12 3-pointers in the game and improves its record to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the North Star. VCSU falls to 8-7 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
 
VCSU opened the game with a 10-3 lead including six straight points from JayCee Richter. Jamestown pulled back in the game with the help of five 3-pointers, including two by Jailyn Martinson, to hold a 25-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Vikings closed the gap to trail 28-21 on a 3-pointer from Tilda Mauritzson early in the second quarter but Jamestown held onto a 43-30 advantage at the half.
 
Jamestown continued to pull away and held the Vikings to shooting just 4-for-15 in the fourth quarter to take the 72-54 win. The Vikings will face the Jimmies two more times this season, including another home matchup on Feb. 7.
 
In Friday night's game, VCSU shot 40 percent from the field (23-57), 18 percent from 3-point range (3-17), and 63 percent on free throws (5-8). Jamestown shot 51 percent on field goals (28-55), 43 percent on 3's (12-28), 100 and percent on free throws (4-4).
 
Richter scored all 12 points in the first half and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for VCSU. Mauritzson added 12 points and Olivia Backus scored 10 points Friday. Ellie Braaten posted a game-high five steals and three assists in the game.
 
Jamestown's Kate Cordes led all players with 19 points and dished three assists Friday night. Jayden Wiest scored nine points while going 3-for-5 on 3-pointers. Megan Oswald led Jamestown's rebounding effort with nine boards, and Samantha Paulsen recorded four steals for the Jimmies.
 
UP NEXT: VCSU hosts Dickinson State Saturday at the Bubble for another conference doubleheader. The women are slated to tip at 3 p.m. followed by the men at 5 p.m.
