Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Diemert's record night lifts Vikings over No. 24 Jimmies

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Ashlyn Diemert set three single-game school records to help the Valley City State women's basketball team to a 91-75 victory over No. 24 Jamestown Saturday afternoon on the road.

Diemert scored a school record 39 points Saturday, besting Mallory Undlin's previous record of 38 set in 2007. Diemert was also 11-for-11 on 3-pointers, besting her own school record eight 3's set last season. Diemert is the first women's basketball player to ever shoot 100 percent on 3-pointers in a single game while making at least six.

As a team, VCSU made 16 3-pointers Saturday to help improve its record to 10-9 overall and 2-5 in the North Star. No. 24 Jamestown drops to 14-4 on the season and 4-3 in conference play.

After Jamestown opened the game with an 11-6 lead, a 3-pointer by Elyse Hebrink sparked a 16-8 Viking run to build a 22-16 lead, capped by a Diemert 3-pointer. The Vikings continued to pull away in the second quarter, holding a 42-29 lead on another Hebrink 3-pointer en route to a 45-33 halftime advantage.

Coming out of the locker room, VCSU expanded its lead to as much as 23 points and held a 68-47 lead at the end of the third quarter. Jamestown wouldn't give up though and opened the fourth quarter with a 16-2 run, including a pair of 3-pointers from Kate Cordes. That would be as close as the Jimmies could get as VCSU halted the Jamestown run with another Diemert 3. The Vikings held on down the stretch for a 91-75 upset over the Jimmies.

In addition to Diemert's record-breaking performance, four more Vikings scored in double figures Saturday including a double double from Ellie Braaten who scored 10 points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.  Abby Aslesen added 15 points while JayCee Richter posted 13 points, and Elyse Hebrink scored 10. Braaten dished a team-high eight assists Saturday and Richter added five while Hebrink contributed four.

The Vikings shot 56 percent from the field (31-56), 60 percent on 3's (16-27) and 87 percent from the charity stripe (13-15). Jamestown shot 44 percent overall (26-59), 38 percent on 3-pointers (9-24) and 88 percent on free throws (14-16). VCSU also held a 34-26 rebounding advantage, and tallied 19 assists in the game.

Jamestown was led by Kate Cordes who scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Hannah Hagel added 10 points while Megan Oswald grabbed a team-best six rebounds.

UP NEXT: VCSU travels to (RV) Mayville State on Friday, Jan. 24 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
