SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The Valley City State volleyball team swept its Saturday matches to round out competition at the Siouxland Invitational.
No. 22 Valley City State defeated Dordt University 3-2 and later defeated Haskell Indian Nations University 3-0. The Vikings finish the weekend with a 3-1 record and are now 5-3 on the season.
VCSU travels to La Crosse, Wis. for two games on Sept. 7. The Vikings will face Judson University at 12 p.m. and No. 5 Viterbo at 2 p.m.
No. 22 VCSU 3, Dordt 2
The Vikings and Defenders battled all the way Saturday, including two sets that went to extra points, but VCSU came out on top. VCSU played from behind but held on to win in five sets, 25-27, 26-24, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-10.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first set until the Vikings took a 5-2 run to hold a 23-19 advantage. Dordt then tied the set with four straight points. The teams traded points, but Dordt finished with three straight points to come from behind and take the set 27-25 on a block from Haley Kuperus.
The teams kept it close again in set two but this time it was VCSU who came out ahead. The Vikings sealed the set with four of the final six points and finished the set 26-24 on a kill from
Emma Lucas.
After a tight third set that went in favor of the Defenders, 25-23, the Vikings stepped it up to pull away early in set four. VCSU went on an 8-2 rally capped by a Lucas kill to hold a 21-13 lead and held on for the 25-15 win and force a fifth set.
The Vikings were first to reach double-figures on a kill from
Macy Fridgen that sparked a three-point run to hold a 12-9 advantage and force a Defender timeout. The Vikings would seal the 15-10 victory with the help of a
Danielle Hagler kill.
Fridgen (16) and Lucas (14) combined for 30 kills in the match as they each hit above .315.
Sadie Hansen posted 46 set assists and Hagler added 13 digs, 10 kills and three blocks.
Delani Clarke paced the defense with 22 digs and
Ellie Rush added 12 for VCSU.

Valley City State held onto its momentum into the second game of the day, sweeping Haskell Indian Nations University 25-16, 25-10 and 25-15.
The Vikings didn't waste any time, pulling away with a 6-2 run capped by a
Morgan Freije kill midway through the first set. VCSU held onto its momentum and built up a 20-6 advantage in set two, en route to a 25-10 win.
The Vikings handily took set three after opening the set with a 14-1 lead – a run that was capped by a
Rosie Anderson kill.
VCSU hit .283 as a team and totaled 41 kills to Haskell's 25. VCSU held the Indians to just a .056 attack percentage.
Hagler totaled 10 kills while
Morgan Nelson and
Morgan Freije added six kills apiece. Clarke added 17 digs and two service aces while
Lexi Thorsgard chipped in 10 digs for VCSU. Hansen finished with 25 set assists in the match.
