Viking Baseball season ends in NSAA semifinals

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Valley City State University baseball team had its season come to an end Monday afternoon as the Vikings suffered a 7-1 loss to Waldorf University in the NSAA Tournament semifinals.
 
The two teams were battling for the right to play top seed Bellevue University in the tournament championship. Waldorf University scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead and VCSU's bats were never able to get going in the loss.
 
Valley City State finishes the season with a 21-33 overall record after going 2-2 at the conference tournament. The Vikings took third in both the NSAA regular season and postseason tournament during head coach Alec DeMaria's first season leading the team.
 
VCSU's pitchers set a new school record with 494 strikeouts this season, breaking the previous record by more than 100 strikeouts.

The Warriors scored three runs in the first inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.
 
The Vikings pushed across their lone run in the fourth inning, getting back-to-back singles by Jamel Chabot and Dustin Mertz to start the inning. VCSU eventually pushed across a run with a fielder's choice ground ball off the bat of Kaden Rozdeba.
 
Chabot and Daegen Morcom each had two hits for VCSU's offense. Seniors Dustin Mertz and Tory Nelson each had a hit in their final game as a Viking.
 
The Vikings used six different pitchers in the loss. Hunter Magnuson started and took the loss. Eli Chabot, Riley Resnick, Jacob Marx, Keeton Clark and Jay Mendez all pitched in relief.
