MAYVILLE – The Valley City State softball team split Saturday's doubleheader at Mayville after a pair of low-scoring games. The Vikings won the first game 2-0 and fell in the second game 2-1.
VCSU ends the regular season with a 25-20 overall record and a 17-6 conference record. The Vikings have secured a No. 2 seed for the NSAA Postseason Tournament May 3-6 hosted by Dickinson State.
Mayville rounds out the regular season with a 14-29 overall record and a 9-15 mark in the North Star. Mayville could be the No. 4 or the No. 5 seed for the NSAA postseason, depending on the results of Sunday's doubleheader between Dakota State and Bellevue.
VCSU 2, Mayville 0
The Vikings came out on top of a pitcher's duel between VCSU's
Joelle Lamontagne and Mayville's Emily Haines. Each pitcher had only allowed three hits heading into the sixth inning when VCSU brought a pair of runs around.
VCSU scored two in the top of the sixth after
Kennadi Stone was hit by a pitch and
Sierra Crocker drew a walk to put a pair of runners on.
Logan Gronberg and
Alyssa DePoorter each delivered RBI singles to drive in pinch runners
MacKenzie Rist and
Madison Spacher.
The Vikings held off the Comets to earn the shutout.
Joelle Lamontagne picked up the win after starting in the circle and working 5 and 2/3 innings. She allowed five hits, three walks and struck out three. Gronberg earned her sixth save of the season after pitching 1 and 1/3 innings in relief. She did not allow a single hit and walked one batter.
VCSU finished with six hits in the game, including two from
Avery Kuklinski and one apiece from Gronberg, DePoorter,
Makenzee Stone and
Saige Forseth.
Emily Haines got the loss for Mayville after pitching a complete game. She allowed two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out three. Five different Comets had a hit in the game.
Mayville 2, VCSU 1
Mayville's Lindsey Tulla delivered a walkoff 2-out double in the bottom of the seventh as the Comets defeated the Vikings 2-1 in the series finale Saturday.
Mayville scored its first run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Madison Terres. VCSU responded in the top of the fifth when
Ashlyn Diemert drove in
Alyssa DePoorter with an RBI double.
The teams went scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when Tulla delivered the walkoff double to give Mayville the 2-1 win at home.
Rhyan Sigmeth got the loss for VCSU after pitching 2 and 2/3 innings in relief. She allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out three.
Maddy Zander started in the circle and pitched 4 innings, allowing one run on two hits, walked two and struck out three.
Diemert doubled in the game while Crocker, Gronberg, DePoorter and Kuklinski each added a hit for VCSU. DePoorter scored VCSU's only run of the game.
