VCSU Softball defeats Tabor College in Monday split

TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Valley City State softball team split its Monday games in Tucson as the Vikings picked up a 9-3 win over Tabor College and fell 11-5 to Briar Cliff.
 
VCSU is now 7-10 overall. The Vikings have Tuesday off before resuming its games in Tucson on Wednesday. VCSU will face No. 15 Northwestern at 2:30 p.m. CT and Ottawa University Arizona at 4:30 p.m.
 
VCSU 9, Tabor College 3
Valley City State's Saige Forseth scored two runs and drove in two as she went 4-for-4 at the plate Monday to help the Vikings to a 9-3 win over Tabor College.
 
The Vikings tallied six doubles on the day, including two from Forseth, in the win. VCSU built a 5-0 lead in the middle of the fifth inning with the help of RBI singles from Forseth, Kennadi Stone and Alyssa DePoorter.
 
Tabor managed two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-run double by Jordyn Farren. VCSU continued to pull away with a 3-run sixth inning. Logan Gronberg and Sierra Crocker drove in a run apiece with RBI singles and Maddy Zander added a sacrifice fly, scoring Avery Kuklinski, to round out scoring in the game.
 
Zander, Stone and Crocker each finished with two hits, including a double apiece. Zander got the win in the circle after starting in the circle and going 6 innings. She allowed two runs on five hits, walked four and struck out five. Gronberg pitched one inning and allowed one run on two hits.
 
Tabor's Farren finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Bluejays. Annabelle Buhanan got the loss after working all 7 innings. She allowed nine runs on 14 hits while walking one and striking out four.
 
Briar Cliff 11, VCSU 5
The Chargers defeated the Vikings 11-5 after a game that featured 17 hits and 11 total errors – including seven by Briar Cliff.
 
Briar Cliff opened scoring with five runs in the fourth, but the Vikings responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning including a 2-run single to centerfield from Sierra Crocker. Despite Alyssa DePoorter's RBI double in the fifth inning, Briar Cliff found five runs in the seventh inning to secure the win highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by Karina Cupples.
 
DePoorter paced the Vikings with three hits, two runs and one RBI in the game. Crocker and Maerin Dartnell each tallied two hits, and Crocker drove in two runs. Diemert scored a pair of runs for VCSU Monday.
 
Maddy Zander got the loss for VCSU after 3 and 2/3 innings of work. She allowed five runs – none of which were earned – on four hits, walked four and struck out four. Rhyan Sigmeth made a relief appearance and worked 3 and 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two.
 
Grace Batcheller got the win for Briar Cliff after pitching all 7 innings. She allowed five runs – only one of which was earned – on eight hits and walked two batters.
 
Lukes led the Chargers with two hits, two runs and four RBIs Monday. Karis Gifford added two hits and two runs for Briar Cliff.
