DAVENPORT, FLA. –
Kahlil Tilbury pitched 8 shutout innings and
Cam Pero drove in four runs Saturday afternoon as Viking Baseball rolled to an 8-0 victory in Florida.
Tilbury gave up just 2 hits to Calumet College, throwing 111 pitches in a dominant performance. He scattered three walks and struck out six. Tilbury has now thrown 14 scoreless innings this spring, giving up just four total hits.
Cam Pero's RBI single in the bottom of the first inning gave the Vikings a lead they would not relinquish. Pero extended the lead to 4-0 with a two-run single in the seventh inning, and then he capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Leading 2-0 after six innings, the Vikings broke the game wide open with a five-run seventh inning.
"I'm extremely satisfied with our performance today," said VCSU head coach
Alec DeMaria. "We faced one of the best starting pitchers that we will face all year, and our guys competed hard and played clean. For the second week in a row, Kahlil was able to pound the zone with multiple pitches and give us a great chance to win. If we play the way we did today, then the sky is the limit for this group."
Pero was 2-for-2 at the plate with two walks, a run scored and four RBIs.
Jaden Babiuk went 2-for-3 with three runs and a pair of walks.
Kellen Scruggs also had two hits and walked twice.
Dustin Mertz,
Hunter Logan and
Daegen Morcom each had a hit and an RBI.
VCSU totaled seven stolen bases, including two by Mertz. The Viking committed only one error.
Jay Mendez pitched a scoreless ninth inning for VCSU, striking out a pair of batters.
Valley City State improves its overall record to 6-7. The Vikings are now 2-1 on their spring break trip to Florida. VCSU has Sunday off before playing games Monday against Mount Vernon Nazarene and Concordia University (Neb.).
