Viking Men drop quarterfinal game at Mayville

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The VCSU men's basketball team had it season come to a close Wednesday night, falling in the quarterfinals of the NSAA Postseason Tournament. The No. 7-seeded Vikings dropped an 82-68 game at No. 2 seed Mayville State during the opening round of the playoffs.
 
The Vikings finish the season with an 11-16 overall record. Mayville State moves on to the semifinals of the NSAA Tournament.
 
The teams traded buckets throughout much of the first half Wednesday in Mayville. The Vikings held a 20-19 lead midway through the first half before the Comets took a 39-32 lead into the locker room.
 
Mayville State extended its lead to 60-47 with 11 minutes remaining, but the Vikings had one more push. Back-to-back buckets by LaDarious Stanfield ignited a 13-3 Viking run that pulled them to within 63-60 with 7:18 remaining. The Comets responded with their own big run, outscoring VCSU 14-3 over the next 4 minutes to put the game out of reach.
 
Cleveland Bedgood – VCSU's only graduating senior – led the Vikings with 16 points and knocked down three 3's. Stanfield scored 14 points off the bench on 7-for-9 shooting, and Hunter Lyman finished with nine points and 15 rebounds off the bench. Lamar Grayson added nine points, and both Caden Grinde and Odier Olange scored seven points each.
 
As a team, VCSU shot 47 percent overall (28-60), 31 percent on 3's (5-16) and 41 percent at the line (7-17). Mayville State finished the game at 50 percent overall (30-60), 46 percent on 3's (11-24) and 69 percent at the line (11-16).
 
Five Comets scored in double figures, led by 18 points from Jamison Kramer.
