MADISON, S.D. – The Valley City State women's basketball team fell to No. 10 Dakota State 106-49 Friday night on the road. The Trojans shot 70 percent and made 10 3-pointers in the first quarter to build a lead they wouldn't give up throughout the game.
VCSU drops to 12-13 overall and 6-5 in the North Star while Dakota State improves to 21-3 overall and 10-1 in conference play.
VCSU concludes conference play Saturday at Bellevue. With a win Saturday, the Vikings can secure a No. 3 seed for the NSAA postseason. VCSU's women have already secured a home first-round playoff game scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 21.
The Vikings shot just 24 percent from the field Friday (16-66), 23 percent on 3's (3-13) and 88 percent on free throws (14-16). Dakota State shot 51 percent on field goals (37-73), 45 percent on 3-pointers (17-38) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (15-20).
JayCee Richter scored 12 points to lead the Vikings Friday and
Olivia Backus scored a season-high nine points off the bench.
Adriana Torres grabbed a team-best six rebounds and
Delaney Cotton pulled down five.
Dakota State won the rebounding battle 47-41 Friday. The Trojans finished with 19 assists and 11 turnovers while VCSU totaled 5 assists and 26 turnovers.
Dakota State made 17 3-pointers in Friday night's game including 13 in the first half to build a 70-18 halftime lead en route to the big win. Savannah Walsdorf totaled 25 points, seven rebounds and four steals Friday. Caitlin Dyer added 20 points and four 3's while Angela Slattery scored 18 points and four 3-pointers.
Miakken Vincent scored 11 points off the bench, and Tabor Teel added nine points and four blocked shots for Dakota State.
