Viking women down Trinity Bible 101-39

VALLEY CITY – Valley City State used a team effort to defeat Trinity Bible College 101-39 Tuesday night at the Bubble.
 
Every player on VCSU's roster earned playing time in Tuesday's game and Delaney Cotton led five players scoring in double figures with 16 points while also pulling down nine rebounds. VCSU's 101 points in Tuesday's win ranks third in VCSU women's basketball history.
 
VCSU improves to 8-4 on the season going into conference play. Trinity Bible drops to 4-4 overall.
 
VCSU jumped out to an early lead, holding the Lions to just six points in the first quarter. The Vikings shot an impressive 10-for-20 from the field in the second quarter, and finished the half on a 15-2 run, including six points from Delaney Cotton, to hold a big 51-13 lead at halftime.
 
Trinity Bible found its momentum coming out of the locker room, going 7-for-13 from the field in the third quarter after shooting 4-for-20 in the entire first half. It wasn't enough though as VCSU shot its best 53 percent in the frame to hold onto a 73-31 advantage with one quarter to go. The Vikings then outscored the Lions 28-8 in the final frame to seal the big win.
 
Ellie Powell finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday. Klaire Cotton, Aubrey Prunty, and Tilda Mauritzson each scored 12 to round out players scoring in double figures. Abby Aslesen chipped in eight points while Liz Lukken and Ashlyn Diemert each scored seven. Mauritzson led VCSU with four steals in the game.
 
VCSU shot 52 percent from the field (42-82), 38 percent from 3-point range (9-24) and 73 percent on free throws (8-11). Trinity Bible shot 33 percent overall (14-43), 25 percent on 3's (4-16), and 58 percent from the line (7-12).
 
The Vikings totaled 19 assists to 10 turnovers, while the Lions recorded eight assists to 28 turnovers in the game. Elyse Hebrink and Sophie Bachmeier each dished a team-best three assists for VCSU.
 
Trinity Bible's Marlyssa Ledgerwood totaled 12 points and Angie Soto dished five assists to lead the Lions.
 
UP NEXT: VCSU opens conference play on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Bellevue. The Viking women tip at 3 p.m. with the men to follow at 5 p.m.
