VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State volleyball team swept Dordt University 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 in their final match of the regular season. The Vikings are concluded the regular season 14-13 and 5-5 in North Star conference play. Dordt University is now 14-14 and 8-7 in their conference.
The start of the first set had evenly matched back and forth action where neither team could edge out a sizable lead. With the score of 6-6, Dordt found the first three-point lead of the day courtesy to a couple of aces from
Reagan Bogenreif. They steadily held a two to three point lead until the score was 18-15, in the Defenders' favor. After a VCSU timeout, the Vikings found back-to-back
Morgan Freije kills that started a rally. Immediately after Freije's two kills,
Ellie Rush served up back-to-back aces. A few points later the Vikings had scored nine unanswered bring the score to 24-18. The Vikings closed out the set 25-20 with another kill by Freije.
The Vikings couldn't have scripted a better start to the second set. They opened with a 9-0 run off two kills by
Rosie Anderson, two aces by
Sadie Hansen, three blocks by
Morgan Nelson and
Rosie Anderson, and a couple of attack errors by Dordt. From there, DU chipped away at the Viking lead going on one four-point run earning a couple points here and there. With the score of 22-17, Dordt scored five unanswered, evening the score at 22 apiece. The Vikings then capitalized on a Tarren Spartz service error and closed the set 25-23.
In the third, DU started hot, earning a 4-0 lead. Valley City worked their way back, tying the game at 12-12. Down the stretch it was a team effort. The Vikings got kills from five different players and aces from both
Sadie Hansen and
Delani Clarke. They Vikings completed the sweep 25-22.
On offense the Vikings were led by
Rosie Anderson who record nine kills on the night. She was closely followed by
Macy Fridgen and
Morgan Freije both with eight kills each.
Ellie Rush recorded a career-high six aces on the night.
Morgan Freije was a part of nine blocks.
Rosie Anderson had eight blocks on the night.
Sadie Hansen recorded 28 more assist to add to the school record, and
JayCee Richter had 17 digs.
The Defenders were led by Tarren Spartz who had 10 kills. Haley Kuperus and Payton Doenhoefer both had 9 kills. Carlee Jackson had 25 assists. Madison Vis recorded 29 digs.
