Box Score VALLEY CITY – The VCSU volleyball team came out on top in a four-set match against Dakota State Wednesday night at Graichen Gym, 26-24, 18-25, 25-22, and 25-17.
VCSU's
Sadie Hansen broke the school record for career assists after recording 31 during the match. Hansen breaks Megan Floerke's record of 4217 assists after recording 4224 so far in her career.
VCSU improves to 13-12 on the season and 5-4 in the North Star. Dakota State drops to 15-11 overall and 4-5 in conference play. VCSU now pulls ahead of Dakota State in the conference standings with one last conference match before playoffs. VCSU hosts No. 6 Bellevue on Friday in Graichen Gym.
After an exhilarating first set 26-24, Dakota State rallied back to steal the second set, 18-25. VCSU stepped back up and secured the win with dominant back-to-back sets. Hansen was on fire as she connected with several hitters on the court.
Through the third set,
Macy Fridgen led the team with 11 kills, and
Sadie Hansen totaled 31 assists. Later in the third set, the Vikings pulled away with a 6-2 run that included three kills from
Morgan Nelson. Dakota State made a late run and evened up the score at 22-22, but the Vikings held on for the final three points to take the 2-1 advantage.
After
Sadie Hansen's record-breaking assist recognition, the fans ramped up some excitement and VCSU held on to this momentum as they pulled away with the fourth set, 25-17.
The two conference teams proved their defensive strengths with VCSU totaling more than 85 digs in Wednesday's match. Five Vikings recorded double figure digs, including Jaycee Richter (18),
Sadie Hansen (16), Reagen Bogenreif (15),
Delani Clarke (12),
Gracie Schumacher (10).
Dakota State's defense was anchored by Sydney Schell and Kate VanRooyan who both finished with 19 digs. Madalyn Groft led the Trojans with 17 assists, and Hailey Wathen recorded 10 kills.
UP NEXT: VCSU concludes regular season play with two home games this weekend. The Vikings host No. 6 Bellevue on Friday at 7 p.m. for Parent's Day and Dordt on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
