VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State women's basketball team set a new single-game record with 123 points Sunday in a win over Providence.
The Vikings used a balance effort with six Vikings scoring in double figures Sunday. With its 123-42 win Sunday, VCSU opens the season with a 2-0 record. Providence falls to 0-4. The previous single-game scoring record was set Feb. 7, 2018 with 119 points against Trinity Bible College.
The Vikings pulled away in the first quarter, shooting 14-for-23 from the field and 5-for-8 from 3-point range to hold a 35-13 lead after the first 10 minutes. VCSU used an impressive 10-point run from
Ashlyn Diemert early in the first. VCSU built up a 64-27 advantage at the half, and outscored the Pilots 30-4 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
VCSU finished the game shooting 60 percent from the field (53-88), 50 percent on 3's (11-22) and 86 percent on free throws (6-7).
Diemert led the Vikings with 20 points, three assists and two steals Sunday.
Delaney Cotton posted a career-best 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Tilda Mauritzson was 8-for-9 from the field and 2-for-2 on free throws to total 18 points for VCSU. Rounding out Vikings scoring in double figures include
Abby Aslesen (17),
Aubrey Prunty (11) and
Klaire Cotton (10).
Aslesen led the rebounding effort with 11 boards, including four on the offensive glass. The Vikings totaled 61 rebounds in the game to Providence's 28.
Elyse Hebrink totaled six steals and
Olivia Backus dished five assists in the game.
Providence shot 23 percent from the field Sunday (16-70), 8 percent from the 3-point line (3-36) and 100 percent on free throws (7-7). The Pilots were led by Fiona Garcia who totaled 10 points, four rebounds and two steals. Faith LaRocque added nine points and seven rebounds in the game.
UP NEXT: VCSU travels to Sioux City, Iowa for a pair of games Nov. 1-2. VCSU will play Midland on Friday at 6 p.m. and then face Briar Cliff Saturday at 12 p.m.
