Viking Football defeated by Dakota State 13-6

Madison S.D. - Viking football comes up short in this weekend's game to Dakota State. With a 13-6 loss, VCSU moves to  2-5 on the season and 1-4 in conference play. Dakota State improved their record to 5-3 and 3-3 in conference play.
 
The Vikings started the game with a quick drive highlight by a 57-yard Avery Thorsgard rush. After getting shut down in the red zone the Vikings attempted a 23-yard field goal that was no good. In the defensive matchup, the Vikings were the first to get on the board with a 35-yard Yzan Lorenzo field goal with 2:37 left in the first quarter.
 
In the following Dakota State drive, they evened up the game with their own 26-yard field goal. The Vikings then put together a ten-minute, 16 play drive that ended with a Dakota State interception on a Viking first and goal. The Trojans satisfied with their stop ran the clock down to end the first half with a score of 3-3.
 
To start the third quarter the Vikings once again drove down to first and goal situation where they were intercepted in the red zone. Following the interception the Dakota state became the first team to find the endzone in the game with a Tyce Ortman rush, bringing the score to 10-3. In the fourth the Trojans expanded their lead with another field goal making it 13-3. The Vikings responded with a field goal and a defensive stop. The offense was only left with 1:07 and no timeouts for its last drive. The game ended with and interception on the last play of the game.
 
The Vikings outpaced the Trojans in most offensive numbers with 328 yards of offense, 213 yards rushing and 115 yards passing. Avery Thorsgard totaled 14-24 passes for 115 passing yards and with three interceptions. He led the team with 28 rushing attempts for 181 rushing yards. Levi Olson led the defense with ten total tackles, five solo and five assisted. He was followed by Aiden Russell with 4 solo and 5 assisted, good for nine total tackles.
 
The Trojans totaled 189 yards of offense with 83 passing yards and 106 rushing yards. Quarterback AJ Donovan led the Trojans with all 83 passing yards. Running Back Preston Iverson totaled 15 attempts good for 68 rushing yards. On defense they were led by Taron Serr who had nine total tackles, three solo and six assisted.
 
UP NEXT: The Vikings return home to for a rematch against the Mayville Comets on Saturday Nov. 2.
