VCSU offense fuels sweep over Briar Cliff

VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State volleyball team picked up its fourth straight sweep Friday night on its home court, taking a 3-0 victory over Briar Cliff 25-20, 25-15 and 25-21.

Friday night's matchup was VCSU's third time facing Briar Cliff this season and third sweep of the Chargers. The Vikings improve to 13-3 overall and Briar Cliff drops to 5-10.

Valley City State continues to rely on its powerhouse offense which totaled 51 kills, good for 17 kills per set on the night. VCSU now averages 14.28 kills per set on the season, ranking third in the nation.

Right-side hitter Mardi Scutchings led VCSU's attack Friday with 12 kills on the night while Morgan Freije added 11, Emma Lucas posted 10 and Bailey Nelson recorded nine. Freije and Lucas each chipped in a pair of blocks at the net.

The Vikings also recorded its second-best attack percentage of the season Friday, hitting .307 with the help of a .667 attack by Danielle Hagler who tallied six kills on nine attempts without a single error.Sadie Hansen sets up a hitter.

"Our offense is working well. It is really fun," said head coach Michelle Meiklejohn. "Our offense is awesome because of our setter and because of our passers and I'm just really proud of them."

JayCee Richter led the Vikings with 20 digs and a pair of service aces while Reagan Bogenreif tallied 11 digs for VCSU. Sadie Hansen recorded 40 set assists and eight digs Friday.

The Vikings hold a 10-1 record over the last 11 games and Meiklejohn has given credit to VCSU's block and serving efforts.

"We focused a lot on our blocking, and I think that, along with our offense and aggressive serving, is what takes [opponents] out of system," Meiklejohn said. "I think going into conference, teams will try to get us out of system because of how great our offense is but we are up to the challenge, and we are working on that."

VCSU returns to conference action on Thursday, Sept. 21. The Vikings will host Mayville State at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse due to an anticipation of a large crowd. First serve is at 6 p.m.
