VCSU Softball drops two games Sunday in Tucson

TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Valley City State softball team fell in a pair of games Sunday at the Tucson Invitational Games.
 
The Vikings held a 4-3 lead in the middle of the seventh inning against Friends University, but the Falcons came back to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4 win over VCSU.
 
The Vikings later fell to Embry-Riddle 11-3, decided in six innings by run rule. VCSU drops to 5-11 on the season.
 
Valley City State plays two more games on Monday in Tucson. The Vikings play Cottey College at 11 a.m. CT and St. Clair College at 1 p.m. CT. Both games will have live video and scoring updates available.
 
Friends 5, VCSU 4
Friends University came back from a 4-3 deficit to defeat the Vikings 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday. Fallyn Marshall kicked off the inning with a triple and was driven in by an Aleigha Gale single to tie the game at 4-4. Carolyn Dallimore scored Gale on a fly ball to left field to walk off the victory.
 
VCSU's Riley Perryman kicked off scoring in the game with an RBI double, and later scored on a single by Marissa Hawkins. The Vikings added another run on a Falcon error and rounded out scoring on a Makenzee Stone double that scored Sierra Crocker.
 
Riley Perryman and Sierra Crocker each had two hits, including a double apiece, to lead the Vikings. Makenzee Stone doubled, and Marissa Hawkins and Ashlynne Copinga each added a base-hit. Copinga scored two runs and stole two bases in the game.
 
Joelle Lamontagne took the loss in the circle for VCSU. She tossed a complete game, allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out two and walking one.
 
Laila Spracklen got the win in the circle for the Falcons. Spracklen worked 1 and 2/3 shutout innings, striking out one and walking one. Alex Vick started the game for Friends and allowed four runs on seven hits over 5 and 1/3 innings. Vick totaled eight strikeouts.
 
Friends' Fallyn Marshall went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and scored two runs Sunday.
 
Embry-Riddle 11, VCSU 3 (6 innings)
Embry-Riddle tallied 15 hits and drove in 11 runs en route to an 11-3 victory by run rule Sunday. The Eagles tallied four doubles and a home run in the win.
 
All three Viking runs were scored on Ashlyn Diemert's double in the fourth inning, but that's all VCSU could bring around. Alyssa DePoorter led VCSU with two hits, and Diemert was credited with two RBIs.
 
Brooke Gaudry got the loss for VCSU after 3 and 2/3 innings of work. She allowed seven runs on 11 hits, walked four and struck out three. Maddy Zander tossed 1 and 1/3 innings in relief and allowed four runs on four hits, walked one and struck out one.
 
Kate Delaney pitched a complete game for the Eagles and got the win in the circle. She allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two. Delaney did not walk a single batter.
 
Sam Holbert and Jenna Sumpter each had three hits in the game, and Holbert added a solo home run and three RBIs. Montano added a pair of doubles for Embry-Riddle.
