Viking Softball splits Friday games at PC Dome

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Valley City State softball team split a pair of games at the Presentation Dome on Friday, rematching two of last weekend's opponents.
 
The Vikings defeated Jamestown 10-6 in the first game of the day, featuring an outstanding performance – including a grand slam – by sophomore Alyssa DePoorter. VCSU then fell 12-3 to MSU-Moorhead in six innings as the Dragons remain undefeated on the season.
 
VCSU moves to 4-6 overall. The Vikings play two more games on Saturday at the PC Dome, first against Doane University at 12:30 p.m. and later facing College of Saint Mary at 3 p.m.
 
VCSU 10, Jamestown 6
Valley City State's Alyssa DePoorter was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate Saturday with three singles, a grand slam and seven RBIs to help the Vikings down Jamestown 10-6 at the Presentation College Dome.
 
VCSU trailed UJ 5-3 in the middle of the third inning when the Vikings sparked a 6-run inning including RBI singles from Maddy Zander and MacKenzie Rist. DePoorter's grand slam capped off the big inning for VCSU. DePoorter later drove in Ashlynne Copinga to round out scoring for VCSU.
 
Sierra Crocker went 3-for-4 at the plate including two doubles, and Marissa Hawkins added two hits for VCSU. Ashlynne Copinga had one hit, drew two walks, stole three bases and scored four runs in the win.
 
Brooke Gaudry pitched a complete game and got the win for VCSU. She allowed six runs on eight hits, walked five and struck out three.
 
UJ's Hailey Shaefer got the loss after 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits while walking two. Sunny Halsey pitched 3 and 1/3 innings in relief and allowed one run on four hits. She walked three and struck out two.
 
Maddie Spaeth went 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in one. Gracie Fisher and Megan Neiles each drove in two runs for the Jimmies.
 
MSUM 12, VCSU 3 (6 innings)
The Vikings then fell to an undefeated Moorhead team who defeated VCSU in six innings by run rule. The Dragons pounded 14 hits and scored 12 runs in the win.
 
Moorhead was on the board first with a two-run double by Avery Steffen, and Riley Perryman closed the gap with a solo home run in the second inning. After two scoreless innings, the Dragons scored seven runs in the fifth including a three-run homer by Steffen.
 
The Vikings kept the game alive with a two-run single by Riley Perryman to make it 9-3 after five innings. Moorhead scored three more in the sixth to lead 12-3. The Vikings loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but couldn't bring any runners around, ending the game in six innings.
 
Perryman and Saige Forseth each had two hits for VCSU and Perryman drove in all three of VCSU's runs. Copinga, Perryman and Ella Roaldson each scored a Viking run.
 
Joelle Lamontagne got her first loss of the season, working 4 and 2/3 innings while allowing nine runs on 11 hits. She struck out two and walked just one. Maddy Zander pitched 1 and 1/3 innings in relief and allowed three runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two.
 
Azalya Lopez got the win for the Dragons who started in the circle and pitched 2 innings. She allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out two. Steffen and Reece Dahl each made a relief appearance for MSUM.
 
Steffen led the Dragons with double and a home run, driving in five runs in the game. Jordey Brown-Smith added three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
