ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Valley City State softball team split its games Friday at the Presentation College Dome, falling to Minnesota State University Moorhead and defeating the University of Jamestown.
VCSU dropped the tournament opener to MSUM after five innings, 9-1. The Vikings then took down the Jimmies 10-6, after leading by as much as 10-1 in the fourth inning. VCSU moves to 3-3 on the season. Moorhead is now 2-0 and Jamestown drops to 0-2.
The Vikings play two more games on Saturday at the Presentation Dome. VCSU faces Morningside University at 12:30 p.m. and Northern State University at 3 p.m. A live video stream and stats will be available for all games.

MSU-Moorhead 9, VCSU 1 (5 innings)
MSU-Moorhead smashed 15 hits in five innings as the Dragons routed the Vikings by run-rule. The Dragons were on the board early with a home run from Evey Evans and added five runs in the second to build a 6-0 lead. Mack Gallagher added a two-run homer in the fourth to highlight scoring for the Dragons.
VCSU's
Sierra Crocker hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to break up a shutout going by MSUM pitcher Reece Dahl.
Saige Forseth added a two-out single in the fifth inning but it left the Vikings short as MSUM worked out of the inning to secure the victory.
Brooke Gaudry got the loss in the circle after pitching one inning and allowed five runs on seven hits and walked two.
Maddy Zander pitched four innings in relief. She allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking one.
Dahl got the win for MSUM in a one-hitter appearance over four innings. She walked one and struck out six batters.
Gallagher led the Dragon offense with three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.
VCSU 10, Jamestown 6
The Vikings powered its way to a 10-1 lead after four and a half innings, smashing all 10 runs and 11 hits early in the game.
The Vikings tallied five doubles, including two by
Maddy Zander and one apiece from Crocker,
Riley Perryman and
Alyssa DePoorter.
Seven different Vikings drove in at least a run, led by DePoorter with three and Zander with two. Crocker, Perryman,
Marissa Hawkins,
Makenzee Stone and
Saige Forseth each drove in a run.
Trailing 10-1 in the botton of the fifth inning, Gentrey Turin's two-run double sparked Jamestown's late rally. Maddie Spaeth drove in Turin on a sac fly, and Camryn Schwab added a solo shot in the fifth to make it 10-5.
Jamestown added one run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Kylie Yanzuk but the Jimmies fell short as the Viking defense fielded a grounder to end the game by final score of 10-6.
Zander, Perryman, DePoorter and
Marissa Hawkins each recorded two hits in the game while Crocker,
Makenzee Stone and
Ashlynne Copinga added one hit apiece. Perryman, Hawkins and Copinga each stole a base in the game.
Joelle Lamontagne got the win for the Vikings, pitching 5 and 1/3 innings in the circle. She allowed five runs on six hits while walking five and striking out three.
Marissa Hawkins tossed 1 and 2/3 innings in relief. She allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out one.
Abby Blair got the loss for Jamestown, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 3 innings pitched. She walked one and struck out one. Hailey Schaefer pitched one inning and allowed two runs on four hits. She walked three and struck out two. Taryn Schurhamer pitched 3 innings in relief and did not allow a hit while walking just one batter.
